Halloween 2018: The Coat, Part 2

I'm really getting down to the wire here.

An impromptu business trip suddenly lead to a lot of chaos all at once, so I spent all of my free time working on my costume instead of writing about it.  But that was a good thing, because my first version of the coat is complete!

Now with even more poorly exposed cell phone camera
This was a great learning experience for me, because my sewing and pattern making skills are still pretty low level.  Thankfully, I bought enough fabric to make about three coats, because I was sure I was going to fail and have to do it again.  Hooray for planning ahead.

I started out by laying out the fabric and cutting out my initial pieces.

This is typically what our dining room table is used for

I was following the pattern pretty well, and got a lot of pieces I was happy with.  Following the advice of the internet, I bought a teflon foot so that my fabric wouldn't get caught and was carefully sewing together the back of the coat.  This was also my first time serging - which is super cool and now I will be doing it all the time.

The back!
Stripes!
Things were going well.  TOO WELL.  Naturally, I had sewn the stripes on the wrong way.  So that meant I got to do it again and get a lot of practice on sewing stripes.

The back and sides all sewn together.

It slowly started coming together.  I was working off of a pattern that roughly matched someone my height and weight, but people are rarely cookie cutter, and I had to rip out some seams to make adjustments.  It really came together when the sleeves got added!

Eeee it's looking like a thing!

From here it was a blur of the zipper, hiding the zipper, adding the collar, pressing the seams, and redoing things in between.  I added the zipper and then realized that I had cut the fabric the wrong way, and the stretch direction was not the way it should have been.  So I ripped the zipper out, made sure the fabric wasn't stretched, and did it again.  Then I had to tailor the top part a bit because the chest area was baggy, so that involved taking the zipper out again.  I'm really good at zippers now.

I start doing weird hand gestures when it gets late.

I hemmed the bottom of the coat, then sewed the little piece that buttons on over the collar.  I also tried to press the fabric into place to keep some of the shapes.  That part didn't work super well, but it made a bit of a difference.

Anyway, the final result was awesome.  Here it is with the pants, cuff, and scarf.

First glimpse of the aluminum cuff!

The whole thing is really coming together nicely, but Halloween is coming fast!  Here's hoping I can finish in time.  Four days to go!
