Halloween 2018: Davida

I decided to figure out the rest of the costume from the top down.  Up next was the helmet. Thankfully, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto did an awesome job with the character designs in terms of basing real parts of the costume off of...real things.

So finding out what type of helmet Haruko wears was surprisingly easy.  I did a bit of digging and looking at the concept art, noticed a logo on the front of her helmet with the word “Davida” written.  Some internet sleuthing confirmed that her helmet was based off of a Davida classic, which are real and can be found today. Score!  The only interesting inconsistency was that the stripe on Haruko’s helmet didn’t flare out, but the actual Davida Classic helmet does.  Davida Jet and Speedster helmets have a non-flaring stripe, but the shape is entirely different.

The ear covers don't match the artwork for Haruko at all on the Speedster or Jet helmets.

I tried to see if maybe Haruko was wearing a vintage version, which is highly possible considering the year of her guitar and Vespa, but I was unable to find anything conclusive other than a few sources saying Davida Classic helmets have had the same design since the 1950s.  So, going with my initial gut, I decided to opt for the Classic helmet and write the stripe off as a minor inconsistency that would occur with a functioning helmet.

Davida classic.  This lining and shape is what Haruko wears in the show.

Next was figuring out whether or not she was wearing a silver or a white helmet.  A lot of cosplayers have her wearing white, which looks super striking and quite nice.  I did some digging into stills and the concept art, and it’s a bit ambiguous - the concept art is definitely silver, but the show appears to have it as more of a grey.  They grey color is definitely darker than the white of her scarf and shirt, and matches the goggles (which we know are silver), so ultimately I went with silver. Below, you can also see the comparison of the silver on the Davida logo with the color of the goggles and the helmet. Silver it is!

I also feel like silver fits my personality more than the white, and since my end goal is to be my  own version of Haruko, it helped reinforce my decision.

The final helmet!  Davida Classic in silver.

Davida apparently makes their helmets to order, so it’s a good thing I started on this in early September.  I went with a small to fit my head, because even though the wig will add some bulk, the plan is to use this when I’m riding around town as an actual, proper functioning helmet.

So, the helmet is taken care of.  But what about those goggles?

  1. I feel you should know that, while super awesome looking, that is not a great helmet for riding around town. It's like bare minimum to meet legal requirements these days.

You're more than 50% likely to impact on an area that the Davida Classic simply doesn't cover: https://pages.uncc.edu/visualrhetoric/projects/illustration-video/safety-in-numbers-dietmar-ottes-motorcycle-helmet-impact-diagram/

    1. Thanks for the heads up! I did see that these weren't DOT approved when I was researching them, but I think for riding around the parking lot to get my bearings they will be fine. I'll upgrade to something a bit more robust when I plan to go more than 15 mph!
