Halloween 2018: A Hairy Situation

My wig and goggles have arrived, and I am pretty stoked. 

The wig needs a trim and some styling, but the goggles are as perfect as they were when I saw them online.  

I also managed to score a copy of FLCL Archives and Furikurism for continued reference.  Thankfully everything in there so far reinforces my research, so I'm happy about that!  

Now, hair.

First off, my hair is long, very fine, and very straight.  It doesn’t hold shape or style well, and I would need to cut more than half off to achieve Haruko’s hairstyle.  So, I knew that using my natural hair was going to be a no-go, and I also wanted to be able to use this costume at any time for conventions and events, so a wig was the way to go.  But then I had to find one in the right length, and the right color.  

Haruko’s hair color is...all over the map. 

In some drawings, it’s a bright, almost hot pink.  In others, it’s a dusty rose.  In some, it’s light pink, and I’ve even a few that were fuschia, or orange.  Yikes.  

The one thing we can all agree on is that it’s pink.  Some sort of not quite too hot, but still kind of bright with a hint of orange pink.  Now, one thing that I had never done before was dye a wig, and I already had a lot planned for this costume in terms of making, so I decided to see what I could find that was already a close color.  I also wanted something fairly high quality and something that I could style.  After a lot of back and forth, I settled on a short length layered wig.

It’s pink enough, with just an ever so slight touch of orange, and is layered in the back with the ability to be styled.  The bangs are long enough to get the look that I wanted with the bangs in front of her face (something a lot of other wigs I looked at were lacking), and I think it’ll work well.  I am almost done with her head!

I'll be doing some styling on it soon to make sure I can achieve the look that I want.  I've never styled a wig before, so it's back to Google for more research!
