For the most part of FLCL, Haruko is wearing this absolutely awesome long red coat vest type thing. I knew from the start I was going to have to make this, since it’s not something I could find anywhere (except for a few not great looking costume package versions) and even if I found something close and altered it, it would have just been better off to make it in the first place, I imagine.

It's like a dress coat? |
I’m still fairly new to sewing and patterns, so the next step was figuring out what pattern I could use to base the coat on. A few cosplayers suggested a Simplicity pattern for a vest with a high collar, while could easily be modified. I figured that was what I would go with until I stumbled across someone who was actually selling a pattern for Haruko’s coat, and an amazing one at that!
With the pattern in hand, I needed to get fabric, buttons, a zipper, and that awesome ring zipper pull thing. The search began.
The buttons ended up being a find from an Etsy shop - they’re vintage, bright coral, and pretty perfect. For the zipper pull, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but ended up looking at both metal o rings and also dreamcatcher craft rings, and I ended up going with the latter. I have a few images that I am using as size reference for the zipper pull, so getting a set of rings gave me a good range to play with.

Oh, some good boot reference here too! |
The fabric ended up being complicated. I went to a few different fabric stores to try to find the right fabric for a few pieces of her outfit (I got some awesome scarf fabric!), but came up empty handed for the coat. Like so many other things, I turned to the internet, where I found...the exact same fabric mentioned in the pattern. OKAY THEN
Thankfully I ordered enough fabric to fix anything that might go wrong, so I will start sewing this tonight. I did sew a first version of the scarf yesterday, which came out okay, but I think I want to try a different technique.

Man this is an awful photo. |
I like the length of it and the fringes, but I was trying to capture how thick the scarf feels, and I think I overdid it by doubling up the fabric. Oops. So, I am going to try a single layer version and see which one works better. I also may change the color - this was a slightly off white fleece, and in the art her scarf if supposed to be lighter than her long sleeve shirt. Right now they're the same color, so I want to find some whiter fleece in this same weight, if I can. Back to the fabric store!
We have a note in film called a CBB, or Could Be Better. It means "approved, but we'll address another note if there's time." The scarf is definitely a CBB at the moment.

Really want to capture the feel of this! |
Alright, I am off to start on the coat, and probably take More Bad Cell Phone Photos With Improper Lighting.
